Cupcakes – By Heather and Lori

I was at the Baking and Sweets Show in Toronto today (I won’t go back, it has really gone down hill.  I was quite disappointed!).  As soon as I walked in the doors I see Cupcakes!  They were the cupcakes from the T.V. Show, The Cupcake Girls. I assume they are not well known in the States.  Cupcakes by Heather and Lori is a Vancouver based bakery.  They made a T.V. show on the Food  Network, following them from the beginning though their ups and downs of starting the bakery and opening a franchise.  I personally can’t stand the show, but the cupcakes were here, how could I not try them!

They had a large booth.  They were selling aprons, shirts etc with their logo as well as the cupcakes.  When I was there, they only had 4 flavours available.  I went with chocolate, it was $4.00.  Most were astounded with the price.  I thought it was reasonable. Baking is not cheap! Most people expect to pay very little for something tasty, it rarely happens.  I was fine with paying $4.00, I figured if they are on T.V. and have all these franchises they must be good.

Came in a fancy  box with their logo

The bag was even covered in their signature cupcake

Excuse the look of the cupcake, I made it all the way home, only to drop the box on the kitchen counter.

The two bites I took were plenty – very disappointed!  There was virtually no flavour in the cupcake itself or he icing.  If blindfolded I am convinced no one would be able to detect chocolate.  They claim “Cupcakes bakes their products from scratch and use preservative-free, basic ingredients, offering customers fresh batches of yummy goodness daily“, well if this cupcake was fresh baked today, I’ll eat the box!  Yuck!  I was really hoping it was going to be good.  I think the $4.00 was for the fancy box.

Why do bakeries have such boring cupcakes? Honestly, mine are better!

Dose anyone know where to get a good, moist, flavourful cupcake??

A Day in New York City

On Friday, the start of March break, I was a very luck girl!  Kris and Selena took us to New York City! I had not been there since 2004, and it rained most of the time we where there, ick, I have been wanting to go back ever since. They had an agenda planned from a few things I said I wanted to do while there.  I wanted to see the typical tourist things, Statue of Liberty, Skyline, Top of the Rockefeller Centre, Time Square etc.  We only had one day so I am going to have to go back and do more, the city is just too big to do all the things I wanted! You are probably wondering why I am writing about a Trip to NYC on my foodblog, well we made one very special stop…keep reading to see where I got to go!!!

We headed to the city around 9:30 am.  Unbenounced to me we took the “path train”, it’s a subway!  I was told we were taking the ferry, as I am extremely clausterphobic.  It was not until on the way it was announced we were taking the “path”.  Trying not to ruin everyone’s day, I tried to keep it together all the while going scanners inside :S

After getting to Hoboken, New Jersey and parking the car we walked to our first destination….

Yep! That’s right! I was at Carlo’s Bakery!!!  The Carlo’s Bakery that is on TLC’s Cake Boss!!  I had wanted to go there for so long, Kris and Selena made it happen! When we drove by there was no line.  After we parked the car and walked there, we had to wait outside for about 20 minutes, not too bad.  It went by really fast as I was super excited and we were taking lots of pictures.

These people were from Italy!

Of course I had to get one too!

Store front.  See the 97? We were number 117, a ways to go…

After about 25 minutes we got in

I was quite surprised at the size, it was very small. Display cases up both sides and cash registers at the end.

Cakes and Cookies

Tried to get a shot of the back

souvenirs

I’m in Carlo’s Bakery!!!!

Biggest strawberries I have ever seen

Fake display cakes around the store

This one was amazing!

Cakes ready to be picked up

Cupcakes – we got a chocolate and a carrot

The Lobster Tail

Mike got one, said it was amazing! Worth the trip its self!

Kris had the girl with served us come take a picture we me, (we didn’t see anyone from the show) all the while saying very loudly how they will see me soon on TLC with Erica’s Edibles….quite embarrassing!

When we got inside things went quite quickly.  They were at #112, I figured the length of time we waited outside I would have lots of time to look around and see what to get.  For some reason when they were calling the numbers no one was answering so they got to us quite quickly.  Without having seen everything I quickly said I would have a brownie and a chocolate cupcake.  After having paid and seeing more I would make a different selection next time, because there will be a next time!

When we were finished at Carlo’s we had to hightail it to the “path” as we were running behind.  We did not get a chance to drop the Carlo’s bag off in the car, so it came with us to the city.  I get in the train (underground, I might add) and try to keep my mind off of where I am so I started digging in the Bakery bag.  Mike started eating his Lobster tail, powdered sugar everywhere! I make him wait so I can take a picture of it because some people back home wanted me to bring them one, but I knew it would not last, I figured a picture would do.  I then get a shot of Kris and Selena breaking into the Coffee cake, it looked heavenly.  Then I proceed to take a shot of the lovely chocolate cupcake.  Just as I take a beautiful shot  a very serious security lady walks up to us.  She says “you know that picture you just took?” (we were all thinking she was impressed that we had been to Carlo’s Bakery) “You are going to have to delete them ALL or you are subject to a large fine”  WOW! were we taken aback!  So, I am already freaking out being on the “path” now I have to delete the main picture I wanted from the trip!  As I am shaking with nervousness trying to remember how to delete the pictures (it took me a few trys, I was that freaked out, couldnt for the life of me how to delete pictures from my own camera!) I hear her say that it is also against the rules to eat on the train.  I am somewhere I don’t want to be and I have broken 2 rules!!!  Get me out of here!!!  You are not allowed to eat on the “path” because of the rats and can’t take pictures because it is the train that takes you to the 9/11 memorial. Understandable.

So this is the only picture I managed to keep

So, defeated, I pack up everything and I try to hold it together.  I see the walls buzzing by me like 4 inches away, there is no getting out of this! I am praying that it doesn’t stop and we get stuck underground.  We finally make it to our destination, the 15 minutes that felt like 15 hours, I was never so happy to see the light of day and fresh air.

Because we were running late we didn’t have time to put the treats in the car before we got on the “path”  we had to carry them all over New York for the day.  We all had our turns, they were dropped a few times before then ended up in a backpack for the remainder of the trip. What was left did not survive so well…

My beautiful chocolate cupcake, looked so much nicer in the picture I had to delete!

The coffee cake with thick crumb topping

Did not get a picture of the cannoli before someone ate it, I hear it was wonderful.

The verdict – The coffee cake was wonderful!  that crumb topping was amazing!  I am going to have to find a recipe for something like this.

The carrot cupcake was not so great.

The chocolate cupcake itself was not fantastic but the icing was great!

I will definitely go back to Carlo’s.  Next time I won’t be so awestruck and will be better prepared to order.  They also have a cool order on-line feature.  You can order your items online, then set up a specific pick up time, to skip the line.

It was an amazing experience!  Thank you Kris and Selena for making it happen 🙂

We went out for lunch in little Italy, to a place called Lunella.  It was amazing! check it out here.  I didn’t get any pictures as it seemed a little fancy to whip out the camera, but I wish I had of.

We had a fantastic day in NYC.  There is so much to see and do, you need about a week to do everything you want.  This just means I HAVE to go back 🙂

Thanks again Ladies

Jersey Food

We went to Jersey this weekend and they always have different foods that you just can’t find here in Canada or our area of Canada.  Some were excellent and some were not.  Just thought I would share a few…

On the way down we stopped at a 7/11 and I saw this, Ben and Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream.  At the 7/11 it was $6.00!!! had to pass on it.  Later in the week we were at ShopeRite and it was on sale for $2.49, I could not resist.

When we got home I don’t even think I helped put the groceries away before I dug out a spoon to try the ice cream…

Looks delicious doesn’t it??

Well….

I hated it!!! So disappointed.  I did try a second spoonful, but that was it.  I should have stuck with my favourite Half Baked.

The next treat was from Dunkin’ Donuts.  Mike’s Mom had seen these ‘Iced Hot Chocolate” and thought we should give them a try.  Seemed like a good idea to me.

It was OK.  Just tasted like a Chocolate Milk Slushy.  Probably would not get another one

Oreo’s were on sale when we were there.  I gotta say, in my life I have never seen anything like it. People had upwards to 10 boxes of Oreo’s in their carts.  They go crazy for them down there.   They have a much bigger selection of Oreo’s then we do

Loved the triple double.  Both the vanilla and chocolate filings were great together.  Was not a big fan of the peanut butter ones though.

Glad to be back home to home cooked meals and no new tempting treats

British Chips

When we were are the Pickering Ribfest on the weekend they also had other vendors, we stumbled across Simply British.  They had all these weird flavours of chips imported in, they were 4 for $5 so we thought we would give some a try.

They are made by Lay’s, here is the verdict…left to right, top to botteom

Pickled Onion – EWWW was so strong made you pucker up.  I love that in salt and vinegar but these tasted horrible!

Roasted Chicken – not a big fan.  They had a funny taste to them.  We have a roasted chicken chip in Canada that is good, this was not.

BBQ Ribs – these ones were OK, one of the better ones.  Not something I would have again tho.

Cheese and Onion – These were actually pretty good.  I would get them again.  They were like the Aux Gratin chips you can get, but with a hint of onion.

Prawn Cocktail – Absolutely disgusting! that is all i have to say about that!

French Fries, salt and vinegar – these were my favourite.  They were shaped like fries with salt and vinegar flavour

Steak and Onion – another good one.  Had a nice smokey flavour. I would have again

Worcester Sauce – yuck! tasted like no Worcester sauce I have ever had

They were fun to try, but probably won’t be going back to get anymore.

Some Ottawa Eats

This past weekend I spent some time in Ottawa with my Mom, we had a fantastic time and indulged in some wonderful food.  Here are a few of the items you just don’t see around Peterborough.  When in Ottawa you must go to the By Ward Market and try some of their wonderful foods

I spent alot of time in this store, The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.  The smells coming form here were fantastic!

If that chocolate was not behind the counter I swear I would have put my mouth right under the flow haha…

They had many different types of covered apples.  This one really caught my eye, Carmel dipped, then Oreos stuck, drizzled with milk and white chocolate then more Oreos.  WOW

This one I just had to try.  Oreo Bark!  Wow was it tasty!

This sign was in the window of a homemade ice cream and hot dog hut.  Just thought it was funny.

If you are ever in Ottawa or anywhere else you see a Dunn’s Famous Deli you MUST eat there.   Their food was excellent.  They are known for their smoked meat sandwiches but have many other tasty selections, Mom had the homemade Mac’n Cheese, was excellent!

But this is what I ordered….

The best smoked meat sandwich I have ever had.  Mom, who does not like smoked meat – hence ordering the mac’n cheese, just loved it! She actually said she wished she had ordered one.  We shared it, it was Huge!  The meat was so moist, juicy and tender.  I will definitely be heading back to Dunn’s!

And Finally….

Beaver Tails, a deep fried dough that is to die for.  Ottawa is known for them, you can’t seem to get them many more places.  I always get the cinnamon sugar, but they have many others to choose from.

Food you just don’t See around here….

I was in New Jersey with my Fiance this past weekend for the the American Thanksgiving we had a great time and thought I would share some of the food we experienced, we we generally around here.

Deep Fried Macaroni

I first had these one of there first few times I was in Jersey, at the Cheesecake Factory and have been telling everyone back home about them ever since.   So this time I wanted to show everyone how wonderful they are.  I would love if they brought the chain to Canada, there food is very good, and huge!

I tell you they are to die for!  Some of the best macaroni and cheese I’ve had coated in bread crumbs and deep fried, topped off with a very nice creamy tomoatoe sauce.  I swear its heaven in your mouth!

As their name suggests they also have Cheesecake, lots of Cheesecake….

I choose the Snickers Cheesecake.  It is looking a little weathered because I had to get it to go…

After letting all that digest…the next day…..

I have heard so much about the Rutgers “Grease Trucks” home of the famous

Fat Cat Sandwiches

There are 5 “grease trucks” that sell amazing food that you could never imagine together.  For instance, I had the Fat Chicken….

Chicken, French Fries, Lettuce (they had to have some nutrition) onions and alot of mayo

Mike had a Fat Koko…

Steak, pizza sauce, mozz sticks, french fries and lettuce

Later that day we had Deep Fried Oreos! To die for! warm cookie and the icing is slightly melted, all wrapped in a funnel cake like batter!

Needless to say, I came home very full!  If I lived there I would weigh 800 pounds!  Great time and cant wait to go back!
